The city of Venice, capital of the Veneto region of Italy, is made up of many small islands, which lie in the Venetian Lagoon at the northern end of the Adriatic Sea. Venice and its lagoon were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The 4 km long Canal Grande, or Grand Canal, Venice's main thoroughfare, is lined with fine palazzi and churches dating from the 12th to the 18th century and is one of the most famous waterways in the world.
