THE GENUS RHINOCLAVIS 113 Pacific, whereas those hving Rhinoclams species which are absent in the Red Sea (brettinghami, bituberculata, diadema, longicaudata, gemmata, aluco, clava, nobilis and phylarchus) are restricted in their distribution and are nowhere found in the vicinity of the Red Sea, With regards to R. vertagus it appears from fossil records that the area of distribution of this species has contracted throughout the Indo-Pacific, and that at present it is not recorded from any regions adjacent to the Red Sea. Apparently the same factors which have been operative in the con- traction of its distribution elsewhere were also responsible for its ex- tinction in the Red Map 7 - Distribution of Rhinoclavis {Proclava) species in the Indo - Pacific (redrawn from HouBRiCK, 1978) : R. sordidula, R. kochi. Accordingly, it may be deduced that neither the relative isolation of the Red Sea nor its extreme conditions of temperature and salinity have prevented the introduction and dispersion since the Post-Glacial Period of any Rhinoclavis species, which were able to reach the southern entrance to the Red Sea. In this respect it deserves mentioning that the Gulf of Aqaba could be considered as a cul-de-sac, being relatively cut-off from the main body of the Red Sea by the very narrow and shallow « sill » of the Straits of Tiran. However, the examination again of the distribution maps for the five Rhinoclavis species living at present in the entire Red Sea shows that all of these have been extensively Annali Mus. Civ. St. Nat. G. Doria, Vol. LXXXV.
