John Syer Bristowe was born at Camberwell in belonged to a medical family, botli his father andgrandfather having practised Physic. He received hiseducation as a boy at Kings College, whence he went toSt. Thomass in 1846. There he took most of the prin-cipal prizes, securing the highest distinction, the Trea-surers Gold Medal, in 1848. In 1849 he obtained thediplomas of and , and in the same year wasappointed House Surgeon.
