SYKES, Fire Com-missioner and a member of thefirm of Chadwick & Sykes, Inc.,Contracting Engineers, is a nativeof San Francisco, which has alwaysbeen the scene of his business andcivic activities. He was born June20, 1876, the son of Charles H. andJane X. Sykes, who were likewiseborn and reared in thiscity andactive in its welfare. Commissioner Sykes received hisacademic education in the publicschools of San Francisco. He en-tered upon his practical experiencein construction and engineeringwork as a draughtsman and engineerin the Union Iron \\orks, the great-est ship-building plant on the westcoast of America, and particularlyconspicuous at this time as the builder of the Oregon, the leaderof the battleship fleet sailing through the Panama Canal to visit thePanama-Pacific International Exposition.
