Drawn up by Francis Baily, It is with great pleasure we observe the rapidity with which the continental naturalists describe and even figure their disco- veries ; for in less than two years after the return of the travellers sent to collect the subjects of natural history in the forests of South America, by the King of Bavaria, Dr. Spix has been enabled, by the excellent state of the continental museums, to write monographs on the reptiles and birds which were found in his travels. In the part of the reptiles (the snakes) he was cer- tainly assisted by Dr. Wagler, a most enthusiastic erpetologist, •who'is engaged on a history of this order of animals. The work is published in a size worthy of the royal auspices, under which it is produced; for although it is not quite so large as the "large work on Egypt," the large paper copies are not much inferior. The figures are lithographic, and do great credit to the talent of the artist; for the general accuracy of their outline and the minuteness of their detail, and indeed as
