German Mirak rocket, 1929. The Mirak rockets were built by the German Verein fur Raumschiffahrt (VfR, Spaceflight Society), which was active from 1927 to 1933. Members included Hermann Julius Oberth (1894-1989) and Wernher von Braun. The society also promoted space travel, and Oberth worked as a consultant on the film Frau im Mond (Woman in the Moon, 1929), directed by Fritz Lang. This rocket was intended to be launched at the premiere of the film, but the launch failed. The VfR went on to launch the successful Repulsor rockets, some of which reached over a kilometre in height. This early work led to the German V- rockets, and the rockets used in the Soviet and US space programs.
