Stroke. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of a brain affected by a cerebrovascular accident, or stroke. The scan shows a horizontal slice through the head, with the eyes at the top. The damaged tissue is at centre right (red). A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or ruptured, damaging blood flow and starving part of the brain of vital nutrients and oxygen. If the patient survives, damage to the brain can cause a variety of symptoms. Strokes that affect one side of the brain, like this one, often result in weakness or paralysis of the opposite side of the body. If the dominant cerebral hemisphere (usually the left) is affected, speech may be impaired.
