The drawing must certainlyhave been less stiff than usual; and, if there is notmuch variety in the attitudes of the three spearmenin front, at any rate those attitudes contrast well, botbwith the stillness of the unengaged attendants in therear, and with the animated but very different attitudeof the king. Before the subject of Assyrian sculpture is dis-missed, it is necessary to touch the question, whetherthe Assyrians applied colour to statuary, and if so, inwhat way and to what extent. Did they, like theEgyptians,^ cover the whole surface of the stone witha layer of stucco, and then paint the sculptured partswith strong colours—
