Valletta. View of a bulwark in the city walls of the fortified city of Mdina, Malta. Mdina served as the island's capital from antiquity to the medieval period. A bulwark (or bastion) is a structure projecting outward from the curtain wall of a fortification. It consists of two faces and two flanks, allowing fire from the flanks to be able to protect the curtain wall and also the adjacent bastions.
