. The elements of pathological histology with special reference to practical methods . owing of the coronary arteries, and general autTmia, occurring either diffusely or in a circumscribed form as small yellowspots, especially under the endocardium of the musculi papillares. 1 A v^ery conspicuous prominence of the cenientin*g substance in the foim ofbroad or swollen-looking stripes may also be frequently observed in cases ofsudden death, especially when occurring in consequence of rupture of the heartor sclerosis of the coronary arteries, as well as in certain infective diseases ; andthis change may even advance to such a degree that gaping fissures appear onthe site of the bands of cement. As what takes place here is evidently solutionof the connection between the cells of the myocardium, the condition isdescribed as dissociation or fragmentation. It may probably be, however, thatit only takes place in the death-struggle. DEGENERA TIONS 19S In this condition the primitive bundles are found covered or infil-trated with more or less numerous fat-drops arranged at first in. in Fig. 94.—Fatty Dkoeneration of Stripkd Muscul.\r Fibres, x 285. Prepara-tion made by teasing after action of acetic acid, a, Primitive bundles of the RectusAbdominis muscle ; commencing degeneration ; 6, Branched primitive bundle of myocar-dium ; advanced degeneration. longitudinal rows. All these droplets, or at least the greater number, are very minute, and when present in large quantity no longer allowthe nuclei or striation to be distinguished (h). Fatty degeneration must not be confounded with fatty infiltration ofthe heart {cor adiposum), which however does not affect the musculartissue, but merely the subserous and interstitial connective consists in a change of the latter into adipose tissue. Amyloid, hyaline, and ivaxy degenerations also occur in the heart, where theypresent the same microscopic appearances as elsewhere; and lastly, fatty and mucous degenerations of the endocard
