A cannon of the 1800's deployed by order of the Russian Czar at the Suomenlinna maritime fortress off Helsinki, Finland


This artillery piece dating from the 1800's, shown here from its port side aspect, is deployed in a defensive position at the Suomenlinna maritime fortress off the coast of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. At the time, Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy of the Czar of Russia, and Suomenlinna was one of the strongholds in a chain to protect access to the Imperial capital, St Petersburg.
