Broadcasting of Ice Conditions by Radio Facsimile Charts. In Radio Station NIK at Ice Patrol Headquarters in Argentia, Nfld., a Coast Guard operator broadcasts radio facsimile charts of ice conditions in the North Atlantic. This system was used for the first time during the 1961 Ice Patrol and has been continued. It provided mariners with a direct picture of ice conditions observed in contrast to the long verbal bulletins ordinarily broadcast twice daily.
