During spring time, the leaves of the Pieris japonica, Japanese andromeda or Japanese pieris, a member of the family Ericaceae, develop a striking foliage which emerges bright red before turning glossy, dark green. The shrub is native to eastern China, Taiwan, and Japan where it grows in mountain thickets. It is also widely cultivated in gardens, and parent to the cultivated hybrid Pieris
