Knox was the site of the fifth debate Between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in 1858 as the pair were running as opposing candidates for office of President of the United States. Knox College, a private institution, has an enrollment of about 1,400 students. The Old Main in a registered National Historic Landmark by the Department of the Interior.
