Sperm. Computer artwork of human sperm (spermatozoa), the sex cells of the male. Each sperm is about millimetres in length. Its head contains genetic material that is transferred to the female egg (ovum) during fertilisation. The flexible tail enables the sperm to propel itself along the female reproductive tract. Only one sperm can successfully penetrate the egg and fertilise it by fusion of its genetic material with that of the egg. A sperm is formed by meiotic cell division in the testes. It contains 23 chromosomes, including an X or Y sex chromosome.
