Tourist boat cruising along the Sint-Annarei Canal (1127) in Bruges, Belgium

The Saint Anna Canal (Sint-Annarei) is a canal and a street with the same name on its east bank. It is located in the historical city center of Bruges. Three bridges cross the Saint Anna Canal; the Mill Bridge (Molenbrug), the Saint Anna Bridge (Sint-Annabrug) and the Straw Bridge (Strobrug). It was named after the nearby Saint-Anna Church area. Originally though it was known as the Scottish Causeway (Schottendijk) because of all the Scottish traders that used to live there. From 1127 onward the Saint Anna Canal (Sint-Annarei) was part of the first ramparts of Bruges. The Old Mill Gate (Oude Molenpoort) was actually located near the Mill Bridge (Molenbrug). From 1623-1855 the Saint Anna Canal was part of the canal between Ostend, Bruges and Ghent. In 1750 all the bridges over the canal were replaced by wooden (and later on iron) swing bridges to allow the passage of bigger boats/ships. Later on the bridges were replaced once more by the stone bridges that we see today. Some traces of the medieval activities that took place here can still be found at the following addresses : - no. 4 : former warehouse; - no. 17 : brewery The Deer (Den Hert); - nos. 23-27 : brewery The Eagle (Den Arend - Aigle Belgica).
