The lantern of the lighthouse at Portland Bill in Dorset, UK, silhouetted against the sun.
The lantern and tower of Portland Bill lighthouse in Dorset, UK silhouetted against the sun. Lighthouses in the UK are run by the organisation Trinity House which gets its money from a tax on shipping called "Light Dues". The rate is based on the registered tonnage of the ship. The Portland Bill lighthouse was built in 1906, and stands 35m high. As well as acting as a daymark, it also protects shipping from "The Shambles", a dangerous sandbank offshore.
