Soviet made P15U Styx cruise missile at an Indian Navy Museum Karwar India


P15U Termit (termite) ship board cruise missile was of Soviet origin and was designed to fit smaller, more numerous ships, while maintaining a heavy striking power. It was given the NATO reporting name was Styx or SS-N-2 Introduced into Soviet service in 1960 the P15 weighed around 2,340 kg. With a self -active homing radar it typically flew at an altitude of between 100 to 300 metres having a top speed of mach, and a range of 40 km. The warhead was a powerful 500 kg hollow charge device. Supplied to the Indian Navy the P15U was used operationally during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, when Indian Osa class missile boats raided the port of Karachi causing severe damage and sinking several ships with their missiles, The Chines derivative is commonly known as the Silkworm. Now obsolete this missile was photographed near the new Indian Naval base at Karwar.
