LIKE many of your readers, I have longtaken a deep interest in this can be no doubt that Grapes sufficientlygood to make fair wine were very generallygrown in England only a few centuries ago ; itis almost equally certain that our climate has im-proved, not deteriorated, since then—in EastAnglia especially this has certainly been thecase. The drainage of mere and fen hasexerted a powerful ameliorating influence onthe climate, and yet good wine was grownaround such cathedrals as Bury, Ely, and inanymore, with inland seas almost sweeping up totheir very gates. We are always told that theGrapes were sour and the wine worthless. Ofthis, however, we have no proof; no one cancall up the spirits of those who enjoyed orrevelled in these old English wines from thevasty deep of the long-forgotten past and cross-examine them.
