Solar powered led lights as street lighting aka The Solar Mallee Trees sculpture. Adelaide South Australia
These solar collectors, in the shape of Mallee trees, are outside the Adelaide Festival Center. The City of Adelaide installed these solar collectors in the shape of the indigenous mallee tree as part of the Adelaide Green City program. Sitting outside of the Adelaide Festival Center, they serve as a demonstration of the possibility of solar energy. They have an audio component, which explains their background. Each tree produces 864 KWh per year, but only uses 125 KWh; what is not used to power the audio feature and night lighting is returned to the electricity grid. Design: MPH Architects and Street and Park Furniture Pty Ltd. Installed 2005. Street and Park Furniture were involved in the design process in conjunction with MPH Architects, and involving the solar expertise of Pecan Lighting. As well as being able to utilise their world first handmade curved solar panels, Street and Park also looked after the fabrication and installation. The Trees also use colour changer LED’s lights and a motion activated sound system. []
