The Dhamekh Stupa at Sarnath, a complex of stupas and temples where Buddha gave his first sermon after receiving enlightenment more than 2500 years ago. The site now attracts Buddhists and other visitors from all around the world. Sarnath is one of the four holy Buddhist sites sanctioned by the Buddha himself for pilgrimage. The fence is to discourage pilgrims from touching the stone or applying gold leaf to it whilst circulating round the stupa.
