Southern California; . t striking after viewing the miles oforange trees. Here the soil is sandy, full of boulders, and half covered with harsh shrubs which are but onedegree removed from the plants of the desert. It is astriking illustration of the change which has beenwrought throughout Southern California by the aid ofthe irrigating ditches. At Highlands we are once morein the midst of a productive orange district, whichextends for miles along the foothills above San Bernar-dino. This portion of the railroad forms the upper loop ofthe famous Kite-shaped Track, which extends in the formof a modern race track through the very heart of South-ern California. The excursion over this track from LosAngeles to San Bernardino, around the loop] throughRedlands and Highlands and re- • >. crossing at San Bernardino to thelarger loop which returns to LosAngeles by way of Orange, can bemade in a day, affording the trav-eler an opportunity to scan a largesection of country. The SantaAna Canyon between Riverside and. Orange is a lovely valley with the willow-friuged streamhemmed in by gracefully rising mountain ranges, and incharming contrast to the great areas of orange grovesand the intervening patches of unreclaimed mesa land.
