House 1 at Skara Brae Neolithic settlement, Orkney, Scotland, UK, looking E showing entrance passage (centre rear) & central hearth flanked by 2 slab-built box beds (one with 'bedposts'). Entrance (rear R) leads to a guard cell which operates the bar-hole to secure the slab door. Around 5,000 years ago, a cluster of 6 self-contained drystone-walled houses linked by subterranean passages was inserted into an existing midden so that the refuse material insulated the walls. A separate workshop (8) stood just to the W. Other features in the houses include wall cupboards (keeping-places), intramural cells (some with drains to serve as lavatories), kerbed & paved enclosures, stone tanks set in the floor, & stone rubbers, mauls, querns, mortars & basins.
