The painter knows this style betterby the name of Block, and he has the FullBlock and Half Block, plain or ornamented,to choose from. Then there is another style, call-ed also by some block, but the proper name of LETTERING. 199 which is Antique. These forms of letters have,of late years, been twisted into every conceivableshape so that their identity is almost lost. So great a number of st3^1es present themselvesthat we forego all thought of illustrating themand will leave the reader to choose a style fromthe myriads of examples, while we describe how thework is done. The tools necessary for doing lettering are notnumerous, and the whole outfit may be carriedin the pocket, if need be. A palette (q. v.) maybe made which folds together in halves, as shownin the engraving, by simply adding a pair of small.
