United States to Mexico ; rare north of Maryland, though found in southern Ohio and Massachusetts ; winters from Florida southward. 2. Catbird (704. Gdleoscoptes caroUnensis).—A large, very common, slate-colored bird, with a chestnut-colored patch under the tail and almost black crown and tail. This gro- tesquely active bird can be found every- where around our orchards and shrub- bery.
