Cetus constellation, 15th century artwork. Engraving of Cetus (the sea monster), with Latin text. Cetus was the sea monster that was sent to kill the princess Andromeda, but was defeated and killed by the Greek hero Perseus. The black asterisks show the position of the stars that make up this constellation. This artwork is from the 1482 edition of Hyginus's Poeticon Astronomicon (Poetic Astronomy). This 1st-century BC star atlas was republished several times in the medieval period with woodcut engravings of the stars and constellations.
