Detail of ‘Love-Locks’ Padlocks & Cricklepit Suspension Bridge over The River Exe With Riverside Restaurants and Buildings, Blue Sky and Swans; Exeter

Detail of rusting padlocks on fencing beside the River Exe with Cricklepit footbridge and the Quay in Exeter. The footbridge which crosses the River Exe is the Cricklepit Suspension Bridge. It was built in 1988 to provide 24 hour access across the River Exe, linking Haven Banks and the quayside. The footbridge was designed by Dave Hubbard, the Engineering and Construction Manager for Exeter City Council. It was built for the Exeter Canal and Quay Trust by Christiani and Nelson of Plymouth. The fabrication was by M D Fabrications of Newport, South Wales. There are interesting views from the bridge of the waterfront location which is full of character from the historic architecture, people and visiting wildlife. There has been a quay in Exeter since Roman times but in the 13th and 14th centuries attempts were made to restrict this by rival merchants who built weirs across the river Exe near Topsham.
