Putnam was 1stlieutenant, John Noyes 2d, and George Leander that time the force consisted of 20 men. In 1856, underMayor Dyer, Michael Finnigan was 1st lieutenant, second. The force then consisted of 21 men—2American, 5 German and 14 Irish. In 1857, (underAVentworth) Jacob Rehm was 1st lieutenant for a while,succeeded by H. A. Kauffman, John Noyes 2d, and PhillipPetrie sergeant; 33 men. In 1858, under Haines, AVellsSherman was 1st, and Richard Bellinger 2d lieutenant; 35men. In 1859, Fred. Gund was 1st, and James C. Davis. In 1861, when the metropolitan system was inaugur-ated, William Paulsen was made captain, and Samuel and John N. Norton sergeants. The force wasreduced to 14 men. In 1863, Fred. Gund was made cap-tain, and M. C Hickey and Chas, H. Jennings sergeants;21 men. In 1864, Sergeant Hickey was transferred to the1st precinct, and Jacob Sauter appointed to till his force was again reduced to 14 men. In 18()5, SergeantSauter died and Thos.
