Maui, Hawaii, Ho‘okipa, Native Hawaiian Movement

Ho‘okipa is a beach on Maui which is one of the best windsurfing areas in the world. It features well-shaped waves breaking over a series of reefs plus strong winds — these make it perfect for windsurfing. As a result, a number of competitions are held here bringing the best windsurfers in the world together here. Additionally, board and body surfers will also join in the fun, being careful to not get in each other's way. Interestingly, the word "ho‘okipa" is the Hawaiian word for "hospitality" which one might take as the antithesis of this sign that was displayed at the overlook to the bay and beach. However, many folks with Hawaiian blood still seethe about the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893 by primarily white businessmen and planters.
