After leaving Harrisons Landing on the withdrawalfrom the Peninsula, the battalion was sent to Fort JNIonroe toreplenish its materiel, and thence to the mouth of the Chicka-hominy, Avhere, in a short time, a fine pontoon bridge was con-structed for the jjassage of ]McClellans entire army. This bridge was 1980 feet long, and for the most part was ^^^S IlIE CHIf:F ENGINEER OF GENERAL GRANT. AND WEST When the war broke John Gross Barnardhad just published Dangersand Defences of New York(1859) and Notes on Sea-Coast Defence (1861). Hewas immediately summonedto Washington as chief engi-neer in charge of constructingthe defenses. Later he be-came chief engineer of theArmy of the Potomac withthe rank of brigadier-generaland chief engineer of GeneralGrant. General Barnard hadgraduated from the MilitaryAcademy at West Point inthe class of 1833, fought MAJOR-GENERAL JOHN GROSS BARNARD
