. The National Civic Federation review . address upon his return onavember 8, in the Chicago Audi-rium, at a national mass meet-g arranged by the Americanlliance for Labor and Democ-ey. Men and women from allirts of the country and of alluks of life were present. Jnr. Gompers stirring addressere was this clarion note:The principles of democracy» not flash in the air; they areit fanciful, they are not theo-tical. If they are thought of inat connection they lose their>tency and virility and effect, emocracy must be practiced and•ted every day of our lives tos true. In its day to day work themeriean labor movement exem-ifies this teaching. It practicesanocracy by dealing in the mostndamentally democratic fashionith the employers of labor, rganized labor meets and bargains, collectively, mocratically, with employers of labor. Democ-cy is bedded deep in the structure and life ofe labor movement. There could be no labor!e without democracy. In his Chicago address, Mr. Gompers paid a»rm tribute to the fidelity and integrity of. SAMUEL GOMPERS Premier Lloyd George, Premier Clemenceau, andthe principal guiding spirits of the war in eachof the Allied nations. He found that the greatmasses of the people in all these countries hadappreciated the worth of their true leaders andthat there had been a generous, intelligent andunflinching loyalty on the part of all except a small minority of noisy pacifistsand pro-German propagandists. Of these it seemed evident thatthe mission found the most pro-nounced brand in Italy, whereevery possible effort was made toundo the work of the mission. Butin every case where Bolshevismwas encountered the overwhelm-ing mass of people turned to themission with such accord as toprove beyond doubt the status ofthe dislojralists in point of num-bers. Mr. Gompers did not mentionArthur Henderson in his made no mention of pacifismin England. But this was learnedfrom other members of the mis-sion : MISSION ENCOUNTERED STOCK-HOLMISM AND BOLSHEV
