One thing which must be re- ligiously avoided is fresh animal ma- nure; I have seen fine blocks of hardy liliums ruined by its use. If you do use manure, let it be well decayed and it is better used as a mulch than incorpo- rated with the soil when the bulbs are planted. Between propagation of lilies from scales, small bulblets and seeds there would seem to be a fine opening for you. Let
