Sandstone cliff. View of a sandstone cliff from which iron-rich limonite (orange, lower centre) is leaching out. The cliff is formed of sedimentary Lower Greensand rock. The sandstone layers were laid down in the Cretaceous period (136-64 million years ago). Limonite is essentially iron oxide. It is not used widely as iron ore for iron production, as it has a high concentration of phosphorus impurities. Photographed in the Isle of Wight, England.
