Fish fossils. Rock containing fossils of two Leptolepis sprattiformis fish. Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. This specimen dates from the Jurassic period (between 199 and 145 million years ago) and was found in Germany.
