Lactobacillus casei Shirota bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Lactobacillus casei Shirota, the strain of bacteria found in the Japanese probiotic product Yakult. It belongs to the lactic acid bacteria family. Lactic acid bacteria not only control the growth of undesirable bacteria, but the lactic acid produced raises the acidity of the intestines thus creating a more favourable environment for beneficial bacteria.
