To avoid the errors in this measurementconsequent upon the variations in the length of the sym-physis and the size of the conjugatosymphyseal angle (thatbetween the top of the symphysis and the true conjugate ofthe superior strait), a better and more direct method is thatrecently suggested by Professor Barton Cooke Hirst of theUniversity of Pennsylvania. This consists in measuring fromthe promontory of the sacrum to the upper outer edge of thesymphysis pubis (Fig. 14); the thickness of the symphysis. For this purpose Dr. Hirsthas devised a special form of pelvimeter modelled after theinstrument of Skutsch, but considerably improved. The transverse diameter of the inlet may be estimated byone internal and four external measurements.
