Amsterdam Singel Canal with DHL delivery Canal Boat in early morning in summer.
DHL boat in Amsterdam, carrying DHL delivery bicycles and parcels on board since 1997. The world's first floating express distribution center in Amsterdam does the work of five DHL vans and saves over 3,000 liters of fuel a year. (DHL has a boat in Venice now too.) The Singel Canal is the innermost Canal of the Canal Belt, de Grachtengordel, Amsterdam. 13 out of these 16 houses along the medieval Singel are on the listed buildings register. The oldest date from the 17th Century. Not the oldest, but probably the most famous one is Singel 390, which is called Bouwkonst, the Dutch 17C word for Architecture (1699). It has the most elaborate Baroque door frame of the Grachtengordel, still completely original. The facade is an elevated cornice topped with sculptures of Apollo and Minerva by master sculptor Anthonie Turck. Above them the celestial sphere has recently been re-created. The house is now part of the upscale Ambassade Hotel, which owns 12 monumental buildings along the Singel and Herengracht Canals.
