Although the weapon was not used in World War I, it was tested and deemed operational. Captain Pease of the 316th Battalion devised a method of using the mortar on wheels and then dismounting it quickly. Its first shot would drive the spades into the ground, eliminating the need for building a rock base. The location of the photograph is Vitrey, Vernois, France.
