In 1680, throughhis efforts, King Charles II granted to them a vast tract of land alongthe Delaware River, the grant canceling a great debt which the EnglishCrown owed the Penn family. Soon after the charter was signed Penn issued an invitation to hispeople, urging them to seek religious freedom and giving a glowingaccount of the new country that was theirs.
