Sod house. 19th-century American family standing in front of their sod house. Sod houses were pioneer frontier houses made from chunks of earth held together by prairie grasses. These houses were an alternative to the log cabins used in forested areas. The date is 1886, and this sod house, inhabited by the Cram family, is located in Loup County, Nebraska, USA. Photographed by US photographer Solomon Devore Butcher (1856-1927), who documented farmers and settlers in the Nebraskan sandhills, and wrote a book on sod houses.
