Inside the cab of one of the locos of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
The City of Durango founded the Denver and Rio Grande railway in 1879. The railway arrived in Durango in August 1881 and in the same year construction to extend it to Silverton began. It reached Silverton 9 months later, an incredible feat given the terrain that had to be negotiated. The line was constructed mainly to bring gold and silver ore from the San Juan Mountains but freight and passengers were also carried. Today as the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge railroad it is a major tourist attraction, carrying many passengers on the spectacular journey between the two towns.
