The structure was flat above, and leading down to the ovens below were small holes two or three feet apart. The fire, having been started, was afterwards fed by pushing into these holes at short intervals small quan- tities of fine coal or coal-dust. The utilization of coal- dust in this way struck me as an economical method of using this waste product.
