Traditional mud cloth, now called Bogolanfini depicting an image of a horse with a human head and large wings. The image refers to Buraq; the animal that Mohammed brought during the night journey from Medina to Jerusalem and Heaven. The use of mud as a painting pattern on cotton is typical of the Bamana (Bamara) of Mali, centred on the Beledougou area north and northeast of Bamako. Women spin the locally-grown cotton, then men weave long bands that are joined together. Made in a traditional manner for the tourist market.
