Another result is thateach year several men are disap-pointed in their ambition to take the either limit the number of studentswho are permitted to register in ourengineering courses, or else the statemust provide us with the facilitieswhich we need. We need more recita-tion rooms to accommodate moresections. We need more instructorsto teach them. We need more toolsin our shops, and more apparatus inour laboratories, not only to accom-modate our growing classes, but tomake our instruction vital and effi-. CONANT HALL chemical course, and are obliged tosubstitute for it work for which theyare not particularly fitted, and inwhich they have no great interest. The electrical and mechanical en-gineering departments, on the otherhand, have not so far adopted thepolicy of restricting the number ofstudents. In consequence, last yearsfreshmen class contained 39 menregistered in one or the other of thesecourses. To accommodate such anumber of students with the facilitiesat the disposal of these departmentsis out of the question. We must cient and up-to-date. Of what avail, however, are additional instructors? There are no rooms in which theycould hold recitations. Of what useis new machinery for our shops? We have no place in which to put can we make the apparatus inour laboratories represent the latestadvances in engineering practice? We are already so overcrowded thatwe have barely room to move aboutin safety. The great need of theengineering departments is for moreroom, and more room means
