Still far-ther onward, the Arched Rock and other interesting sights,meet the eye of the explorer, affording pleasure and delight,particularly to the scientific ti-aveler and lover of nature. Onthe highest ground, elevated about 350 feet above the watersof the Strait, is the signal station (4), situated near the ruinsof old Fort Holmes. The settlement of this Islj^nd was commenced in 1764. In1793 it was sm*rendered to the American government; takenby the British in 1812; but restored by the treaty of Ghent,signed in November, ^i
