Broadford Bay, Isle of Skye
Strath is an area made up of small crofting and fishing villages in the south of Skye. Situated just outside Broadford, the second largest settlement on Skye, this photo is taken from the new pier, also known as the 'Big Pier' and "MacKinnon's Pier". Strath is the traditional home of the Clan MacKinnon, whose base was at one time Dun Ringill on the road to the village of Elgol. Later they lived at Castle Moi in the village of Kyleakin. The MacKinnons of Strath helped and hid Bonnie Prince Charlie when he was on the run after the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. Legend has it that the Prince offered MacKinnon the precious recipe for his personal 'eau de vie' liqueur as a farewell gift. This 'medicinal tincture' now commonly known as Drambuie was first made and sold at the Broadford Hotel by a man named James Ross. Broadford, who's originals date back to the late 1700's, lies in the shadow of the Red Cuillin mountains and spreads itself along the southern side of Broadford Bay. Views over the bay extend out to the Isle of Pabay and more distantly to the Applecross mountains on the mainland.
