Ankylosing spondylitis. Labelled artworks and X-ray (right) of side views of the cervical (neck) spine in ankylosing spondylitis. This condition is a form of arthritis which causes inflammation and deformation of the spinal joints. The front of the spine is at left in each view, with a normal cervical spine at top left. The vertebrae (C1 to C7) are labelled, with a disc subluxion (dislocated spinal joint) arrowed for the C5-C6 joint. Diffuse osteopenia (decreased bone density, C3) and anterior and posterior longitudinal ligament calcification are present, with the latter torn. Management of symptoms is with physiotherapy, painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs.
