Polarised light micrograph of a radial section of mature wood of the European larch (Larix decidua). Trees are normally categorised as either coniferous (cone bearing) or deciduous (shedding their leaves in autumn). Larch falls into both categories and is one of a very few coniferous trees which sheds their leaves. Horizontal lines longitudinally sectioned rays. Tracheids, some of which have bordered pits, run vertically. Magnification: x102 at 10cm wide.
