Echo has her voice changed to sound like an old woman. Engraved illustration from 'The Temple of the Muses', 1733. This book represented remarkable events of antiquity drawn and engraved by Bernard Picart (1673-1733). Echo and Narcissus is a myth from Ovid's Metamorphoses, a Latin mythological epic from the Augustan Age. The introduction of the myth of the mountain nymph Echo into the story of Narcissus, the beautiful youth who rejected sexuality and falls in love with his own reflection. Juno realized the truth, she cursed Echo. From that moment on, the once loquacious nymph could only repeat the most recently spoken words of another person.
