American writer and abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (with the subtitle of "Life among the Lowly"). The novel was first published in 1852 and is credited as laying the groundwork for the Civil War. The tales in the novel revolve around Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave.
